After the official announcement of the Minority Report TV series, we finally have some more details… and it looks as though the show will be set sometime after the film.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Amblin executive Justin Falvey offered up some further details on the ambitious sci-fi series.
“Minority Report’s a great example of something that should be [rebooted] because there’s a way to produce that as a series that is not stepping on the film,” said Falvey. “Our way into it takes place after the film, in terms of the time frame. It’s a great title and property, and there’s a great procedural engine that drives it.”

Of course, the very notion of a pre-crime department opens up a very ambitious take on the police procedural… but what state will the pre-crime division be in after Minority Report? Has Tom Cruise’s takedown of the father of pre-crime all but destroyed the notion? Or has it been salvaged from the rubble by a third party?
At the moment, we’re not sure… but if the TV series is set sometime after the movie, it stands to reason that the pre-cogs will feature heavily, and are still around in some way. But perhaps they’re being used in a very different manner.
On the other hand, it could be the perfect chance to take the ideas presented in Minority Report and explore them in an entirely different way. After all, pre-crime may be discredited but the pre-cogs presumably still have their abilities.
“The conversation we’re having is, how do we open this up?” explained Falvey. “How do we bring in an audience and let the show grow? And like anything, most of that is character and story; it’s not about the mythology and the genre part of it.”

Of course, how they do this on screen remains a mystery… and the most we know is that the show will feature a female protagonist. Will it be Agatha – one of the original pre-cogs – or is it someone entirely new? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
