It’s official – the Master will return in Doctor Who Series 9 in the form of Missy, played by Michelle Gomez.
Her appearance alongside Peter Capaldi in last year’s Doctor Who was a controversial one… and flipped many ideas of Time Lords and the Master on their head. But now Missy is back for Series 9. And she’s just as mad as ever.
According to an official BBC press release, Michelle Gomez will reprise the role of The Master in the next series of Doctor Who… and has already started filming.
“Michelle Gomez arrives in Cardiff this week to re-join the Doctor Who cast and reclaim the role of ‘Missy’ for series 9,” they explain. “She joins Peter Capaldi (the Doctor) and Jenna Coleman (Clara Oswald) for the opening episode of the series.”
In fact, it looks as though missy will be appearing in the opening two-parter – that’s The Magician’s Apprentice as well as The Witch’s Familiar. And Michelle Gomez is pleased to be back.
“Things have been a little beige since I left Missy behind,” she said. “So I’m delighted to be putting my Lippie back on. I’m positively dying to see the Doctor again!”
But what can we expect from her return?
“Everybody hide – Michelle Gomez as Missy was an instant hit last year, so she’s straight back to plague the Doctor and Clara in the series opener,” said show runner, Steven Moffat. “But what brings her back into their lives is the last thing they’d expect.”
Does this give us some hint about what Missy might be up to?
I can’t help wondering whether the wording here is important… and Michelle Gomez admitting that she’s ‘dying’ to see the Doctor again seems strangely poignant.
Could this mean that Missy is dying and needs the Doctor’s help to survive? Will she manipulate everyone’s favourite time-traveller into helping her?
For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But one thing’s for certain – it’s going to be an explosive opener for the next series of Doctor Who.
