After wowing comic book fans in Gotham it looks as though Morena Baccarin has landed the female lead in the upcoming Deadpool movie.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 35-year-old actress has landed the female lead in Deadpool opposite Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth.
“Homeland star Morena Baccarin has nabbed the female lead in Deadpool, Fox’s action movie based on the Marvel character,” they revealed. “Baccarin was one of a handful of actresses shortlisted for the role of Reynolds’ character’s love interest. The character grapples with falling for a man with a hideously scarred face.”
Unfortunately, there are no further details on who that character might be… but the current rumours and speculation suggest that Baccarin may have landed the role of Vanessa Carlyle – aka Copycat.
A former member of the X-Force, Copycat’s mutant ability gives her the power of metamorphosis – the ability to change the shape of her own body down to a molecular level. But most importantly, she also fell in love with the Merc with a Mouth and had even been in a relationship with the quick-witted merc.
But does this mean that Deadpool will have a love interest?
In the comic books, their relationship is a lot more complicated than that… and at one point, Copycat uses her shapeshifting ability in order to infiltrate the X-Force in an attempt to kill Cable – a powerful mutant who often teams up with Deadpool himself.
Of course, I can’t help thinking that this is likely the direction they’ll go… after all, a straight-forward love interest would be rather out of character for the brutally violent Deadpool. But a woman’s touch would certainly keep things interesting.
T.J. Miller and Gina Carano are already attached to appear in Deadpool, and it looks as though X-Men’s Colossus may even feature in the movie.
But will Morena Baccarin join them in a super-powered role?
Either way, it looks as though ‘Deadpool’ has just scored a rather impressive leading lady.
Deadpool heads to cinemas on 12 February 2016.
