Neill Blomkamp’s Alien Sequel Confirmed

District 9 director may be making an Alien movie after all.

19th February 2015 by Ryan Leston

Alien Neill Blomkamp

Neill Blomkamp will be making the next Alien movie… after his impressive concept art won over the folks at Fox.

It’s no secret that Neill Blomkamp was working on an untitled Alien sequel – after all, the director himself revealed a ton of concept art online. But while the project was presumed to be dead in the water, it looks as though 20th Century Fox were very interested…

That’s right – Neill Blomkamp will be making the next Alien movie.

Confirmed by the director himself via Instagram, it looks as though Blomkamp will be taking on everyone’s favourite xenomorphs…

Of course, the news was quickly followed up by Variety, who were able to spill a few more details about Blomkamp’s upcoming Alien project.

“20th Century Fox has closed a deal with director Neill Blomkamp to develop a new ‘Alien’ movie,” they confirmed. “According to insiders, the new ‘Alien’ takes place years after the ‘Prometheus’ sequel. Scott is producing both films through his production company Scott Free.”

Of course, Prometheus was based on the Alien franchise, and was intended to expand the reach of the series into uncharted territory. Unfortunately, it did little but riff on the themes of the original movies… and was met with mixed reviews.

“Fox hopes Blomkamp, who last directed Elysium, can take the franchise to the next level,” they explained. Perhaps it’s about time Alien got some fresh legs in the director’s chair.

After unveiling a slew of concept art from the project, it looks as though Blomkamp is off to a flying start… but while details of the film remain sketchy (and mostly in Blomkamp’s head right now) it seems we may see the return of some fan favourites.

Neill Blomkamp Ripley Alien

It’s unclear whether or not Sigourney Weaver is attached to the project, but she featured prominently in Blomkamp’s concept art alongside fellow space jockey, Hicks – played in the original series by Michael Biehn.

Will Sigourney Weaver sign up to the project? And if so, what will Blomkamp put poor old Ripley through this time? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

Do you think Neill Blomkamp will make a great Alien movie? Who else would you like to see return? Let us know what you think in the comments below…
