The first image of Melissa Benoist as Supergirl has been revealed… and it’s a thoroughly modern take on the classic superhero.
After a slew of recent casting announcements, Warner Bros. has released the first official image of the costume for the new Supergirl series – currently in development for CBS. And it looks as though the young female superhero has been given a well-overdue makeover.
Although many fans expected a design that might harken back to the bright red and blue colour scheme of the original ‘80s movie, it looks as though the Supergirl series by Greg Berlanti, Ali Adler and Andrew Kreisberg has opted for a far more modern design.

Clearly reminiscent of the recent Man of Steel Superman costume, it looks as though young Kara Zor-El would fit in perfectly with the new DC Cinematic Universe. After all, she looks as though her costume has been lifted straight from a Kryptonian scout ship.
And with a costume that shows off far-less skin than earlier incarnations (as well as those seen in the comic books) it feels like a real win for comic book gender equality.
“In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today,” said costume designer and three-times Oscar winner, Colleen Atwood. And I can’t help thinking she’s succeeded.
The darker tones of Supergirl’s latest costume are reminiscent of the grittier DC movies we’ve seen of late… and if Kara ever takes to the mean streets of Metropolis, she’ll fit right in alongside Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck.
Not that we can expect that to be on the cards…
Still, it’s a step in the right direction, and this familiar look certainly seems to suggest a closer relationship with the films than we thought.
But could there be any crossover? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
