Oscar Isaac is heading to the X-Men universe, as he lands the title role in X-Men: Apocalypse.
According to Variety, Oscar Isaac has managed to secure the role of Apocalypse in the upcoming X-Men sequel.
“Oscar Isaac will be playing the titular comic book villain in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men: Apocalypse,” they revealed. “Bryan Singer is back to direct with Simon Kinberg penning the script.”
Of course, comic book fans are no stranger to Apocalypse. He’s considered to be the ancestor of all modern mutants, and one of the most powerful beings in the X-Men universe. But when it comes to the movie, we still have very little to go on.
“[Bryan] Singer has described the upcoming X-Men film, which is expected to feature all cast members including Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and James McAvoy, as the most destructive movie in the franchise.”
It’s no secret that Apocalypse is essentially comparable to The Avengers villain, Thanos. He occupies a similar role, too in that he’s an all-powerful being, with seemingly limitless power. But do the X-Men really stand a chance against him?
“Apocalypse will have more of the mass destruction that X-Men films, to date, have not relied upon,” said Bryan Singer in a recent interview. “There’s definitely now a character and a story that allow room for that kind of spectacle.”
Oscar Isaac will make his debut as Apocalypse in the upcoming X-Men sequel, but this isn’t the first time we’ve seen the character…
We first saw Apocalypse appear in a post-credit teaser at the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past. There, he was seen donning a long, hooded robe as he used his telekinetic powers to create the pyramids (a long time ago, presumably in the Egyptian desert).
But by the time we encounter him in X-Men: Apocalypse, I’m assuming he’ll have had plenty of time to work out…
Taking place during the 1980s, X-Men: Apocalypse is set in the relatively modern day, and will reportedly feature younger versions of the classic X-Men cast. But while Apocalypse has found its villain, the hunt is still on for a number of younger characters, including Storm, Cyclops and even Jean Grey.
X-Men: Apocalypse heads to cinemas on 19 May 2016.
