Now that Peter Jackson is all but finished in Middle Earth, what’s next for the prolific fantasy director? Well it’s not going to be a Marvel movie, that’s for sure…
During an interview with Movie Fone, the Lord of the Rings director revealed that he’s not exactly a fan of the superhero genre.
“I don’t really like the Hollywood blockbuster bandwagon that exists right now,” he said. “The industry and the advent of all the technology, has kind of lost its way. It’s become very franchise driven and superhero driven.”
“I’ve never read a comic book in my life,” he added. “So I’m immediately at a disadvantage and I have no interest in that. So now it’s time for us to step back. We’re heading towards something of that scale.”
No doubt, Peter Jackson fans will be a tad disappointed… after all, he exists at the rather geeky end of the filmmaking spectrum. And while it may have felt as though he’d be a great fit for the likes of Thor: Ragnarok it looks as though that’s not even a possibility.
“I’m not going to head off and do a Marvel film,” he said. “So if I don’t do a Marvel film, I don’t have any other choice — I’ve got to go make a small New Zealand movie!”
It’s certainly interesting that he specifically makes mention of Marvel Studios in his scathing indictment of the superhero genre… and I can’t help thinking that perhaps they’ve already reached out to the director for one of their upcoming Phase Three movies.
Of course, it looks as though the chances of him joining the studio are slim to none. But it’s an interesting reply nonetheless.
Either way, it looks as though Jackson won’t be tempted to take on a comic book adaptation. And I can’t help thinking that’s a crying shame. But what will his next big film project be? For now, we’ll just have to wait and see.
