The Flash star Ezra Miller looks to be suiting up as iconic superhero, Barry Allen… but the upcoming solo movie won’t be connected to the popular TV show.
During an interview with the Hippojuice Podcast, co-writer Phil Lord revealed that he believes it will be Barry Allen behind the mask.
“I believe [our Flash] is going to be Barry Allen,” he said. “It’s going to be its own [thing, apart from the TV show] — we’re more trying to stick with the cinematic universe… it really is its own thing, and kind of a stand-alone movie. We’re just trying to think of the best story. I think you guys will like it, it’s kind of a different take on superhero stuff.”
Of course, DC fans will no doubt be familiar with the popular TV show The Flash which stars Grant Gustin in the role of Barry Allen.
But while the character may be shared by the two projects, the upcoming solo film is going to be an entirely separate entity.
“We’re trying to break a story,” he said of the writing process. “It’s interesting, because there’s a really popular TV show out there, and we’re trying to carve out space for the movie that’s apart from that. I think we’re doing alright.”
But that’s not the only thing The Flash will be separate from…
Describing the film as a ‘stand-alone’ movie in the context of the DC Cinematic Universe, I can’t help wondering quite how The Flash will tie into the upcoming ‘Justice League’ movie. After all, it’s the culmination of many of DC’s most iconic heroes.
But will The Flash sit this one out?
There are already plenty of rumours about who will be appearing in Batman V Superman alongside the two DC titans. We know that Wonder Woman will be there, as well as rumours that Aquaman could make a cameo. But will The Flash stand among them, or will he be entirely separate for the time being?
“Chris and I like to carve out spaces where people will let us do what we want,” he said of his career with co-writer Chris Miller. “So much of our careers are like ‘oh, no one will bother us while we try to make a 21 Jump Street movie, because it’s such a crazy idea, no one’s going to know what to do with it’.”
“We’re doing these things kind of like that. They’re part of these huge franchises, but kind of are off a little bit to the side, and that gives us a lot of creative freedom, and that’s the thing we love. Hopefully we won’t waste that!”
Of course, the Justice League movie seems like the perfect place to introduce The Flash. But with the solo film said to be ‘off a little bit to the side’, could he be overlooked for the time being?
For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But I wouldn’t mind betting we see Barry Allen in some capacity. Whether that’s in the iconic red suit remains to be seen.
The Flash heads to cinemas on 23 March 2018.
