It’s finally here: Pixels has released its first official trailer… and it features Adam Sandler and Peter Dinklage taking on some classic videogames.
It’s a simple premise – what would happen if those old arcade games came to life? This is what happens in the latest Adam Sandler family sci-fi movie, Pixels. After a batch of retro games are discovered by an alien race, they mistakenly take them as a declaration of war…
And all hell breaks loose when they use those pixelated forms against us.
Enter Adam Sandler – an ‘80s videogame champion who has long been forgotten… and no works as a home entertainment installer. Convinced by his old friend, the President of the United States, to help save humanity, it’s down to him and a rag tag bunch of gamers to get those pixelated aliens of our backs.
Directed by Chris Columbus, I have to admit – Pixels looks like a lot of fun.
Having grown up with the likes of Pac-Man and Space Invaders in my local arcade, it’s easy to see why I might be a bit biased… and in essence, it’s the kind of concept that really speaks to me.
But going by this impressive first trailer, I can’t help thinking that Pixels could be onto a real winner. It’s the kind of film that’s going to appeal to the geek in everyone, as well as the hardcore retro gamers who could easily stand alongside Sandler and Dinklage.
The visual effects are impressive… and even at this early stage, the alien invaders (probably from space) look incredibly cool. And those scenes with Pac-Man creator Toru Iwatani are just gloriously hilarious.
Also, look out for a rather fun Easter Egg in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment. Let’s just say, there’s a very cool spot of viral marketing in the form of an awesome videogame that you can start playing here…
All-in-all, this is a rather cool trailer for what could be one of the biggest surprise hits of the year. I mean, Adam Sandler, right? Who’d have thought it?
Still, Pixels has really knocked this one out of the park. And if you’re anything like me, you’ll be dying to see those pixelated effects on the big screen. Let’s just hope Sandler and Dinklage can save us from pixelated fury.
Pixels heads to cinemas on 12 August 2015.
