Dawn of the Planet of the Apes might not be the middle of a trilogy… but the second instalment of a Planet of the Apes sci-fi series. At least, according to Andy Serkis.
During an interview with MTV, the 50-year-old motion capture expert revealed that Planet of the Apes might be a lot more than a trilogy…
“I know that part of the desire for Matt [Reeves] to do this next movie is about continuing the enjoyment of seeing these apes evolve,” he explained. “So I don’t think we’re going to see a situation where we’re jumping… It might be three films, it could be four. It could be five. Who knows? But the journey will continue.”
Of course, the end point has been building ever since his first appearance in Rise of the Planet of the Apes when we saw glimpses of a space mission on news bulletins… but it looks as though it may be some time before we get there.
“It might not necessarily be summarized or completely fulfilled in this next one. The point being, eventually we know that we’re going to end up back at The Planet of the Apes, but whether it’s this film or not, I don’t know.”
But what can we expect from the third Planet of the Apes movie? After the events of ‘Dawn’ it looks as though Matt Reeves is still unsure how events will unfold… or how long we’ll be away from our favourite tribe of apes.
“It’s very, very early in where we choose to drop anchor in the next film,” he said. “It could be five years after the event, it could be the night after the events of where we left ‘Dawn,’ so it’s very difficult to know where the story is going right at this moment because it’s being written as we speak.”
Obviously, I can’t help thinking that the longer it takes to finish the series, the better. But as a huge fan of the recent ‘Apes’ movies, perhaps I’m a bit biased.
Either way, it looks as though there is still plenty of story to tell… and Caesar and his apes aren’t ready to take over the entire planet just yet. But how long will it take to get there? For now, we’ll have to wait and see. Let’s just hope Andy Serkis sticks around for the long haul.
