After Prometheus gave us a glimpse at the primordial Alien, Prometheus 2 will feature a brand new form.
In an interview with The Australian, the famed sci-fi director revealed that the upcoming Prometheus sequel will feature an entirely new form of Alien.
“[Prometheus 2 is] fresh,” he said, adding this it is “getting away from gods and dragons and shit. If I see one more dragon I’m going to shoot myself. Stop the dragons.”
Of course, Ridley Scott goes on to describes his original Alien as “the definitive dragon and he’s a mother**ker. The alien’s real which is why it’s probably one of the scariest monsters in film history. So with Prometheus 2 what I’m trying to do is reintroduce a fresher form of alien in the third act.”
Quite what that means for the Prometheus aliens is unknown at this stage… but while he describes the one we saw in Prometheus as being “awfully close to the alien” that tormented Sigourney Weaver, his next incarnation will apparently be very different.
It’s no secret that Scott claimed Prometheus was not a prequel to Alien… and I can’t help thinking that if he really wanted that to be the case, then his Prometheus alien designs were sloppy at best.
Could this be his attempt to further distance Prometheus from the Alien franchise?
If you ask me, it’s entirely likely. But I honestly don’t see the point. It’s obvious that the two universes are connected, that the events of Prometheus preclude Sigourney Weaver’s stint aboard the Nostromo and that however he tries to spin it, ‘Prometheus’ was in every way just another Alien movie.
But is that really such a bad thing? I still enjoyed every minute and the movie still stands on its own two feet. But will Prometheus 2 take the franchise in an entirely different direction? It looks as though it’s heading that way.
