A Red Sonja reboot has landed a brand new writer after years in development hell. And its none other than Christopher Cosmos.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Red Sonja has finally found another scriptwriter and could be headed to our screens…. despite several stalled attempts.
“Red Sonja may be picking up her sword once again,” they explain. “The story of the female warrior, a creation of Conan the Barbarian author Robert E. Howard and comic writer Roy Thomas, has been long in development at Nu Image/Millennium Films. And now after a dormant phase, the redheaded fighter is back in action, with the company hiring Christopher Cosmos to write a brand new script.”
Of course, with Arnold Schwarzenegger poised to return in another Conan the Barbarian movie, it’s no surprise that Nu Image is keen to give Red Sonja another chance. After all, the 2011 Simon West version of Red Sonja would have directly tied into Marcus Nispel’s Conan the Barbarian remake.
Unfortunately, that never happened. But while Red Sonja seems to be getting another chance, there’s currently no director attached to the project.
“No director is attached nor are any actors involved at this stage,” they revealed “At one point, Robert Rodriguez was developing the project, intending to direct his then-girlfriend Rose McGowan. Doug Aarniokoski was another writer-director who worked on the project at a certain stage.”
And for now, details of Christopher Cosmos’ take on the story remain under wraps.
But will the upcoming reboot take any cues from the comic books?
Back in the 1970s, Red Sonja was popularised with a comic book series from Marvel, which had the tagline “She-Devil with a Sword.” Donning her iconic silver-scale armour in the form of a bikini, the comics were eventually revived in the mid-2000s and are still being published to this day.
Considering the slew of comic book movies to hit the big screen of late, I can’t help wondering whether we’ll see something a lot closer to the comic books.
But for now, we’ll have to wait and see.
