It’s official – a small screen spin-off of the Resident Evil franchise is in development, thanks to production company Constantin Films. But will it be any good?
After learning that the popular vampire franchise Underworld will be heading to TV, it looks as though Milla Jovovich’s zombie survival horror franchise will be doing exactly the same. But could ‘Resident Evil’ make a more seamless transition to television?
According to Variety, the iconic videogame franchise will soon head to TV… and after an interview with Executive Chairman of Constantin Films, Martin Moszkowicz, they should know.
“Film brands to be adapted into TV series would include ‘Resident Evil’, which would become a TV series after the next feature film,” they explained. But how will this all-new TV show rise from the sixth film?
The upcoming ‘Resident Evil’ sequel is reportedly titled ‘Resident Evil: The Final Chapter’. And that certainly sounds as though a sequel spin-off series could be a little problematic. Of course, there’s no reason that the new TV show has to have anything to do with Milla Jovovich. In fact, I’d say it’s incredibly unlikely that she’d be convinced to indulge in a small screen role.
So does this mean an all-new set of characters?
Despite being continually mocked by critics and gamers alike, the Resident Evil film franchise continues to draw crowds at the box office. And so perhaps a spin-off is a good idea. Following the success of The Walking Dead it’s no doubt that the zombie survival genre is alive and well. And this might even be the creative kickstart that the Resident Evil series needs.
Would a Resident Evil TV show attract the same audience as the movies? It all depends on how the studio plays this out. But if you ask me, the very concept of Resident Evil seems to fit well with the episodic format.
Let’s just hope they get it right.
