Ridley Scott In Talks For The Merlin Saga

It looks as though The Merlin Saga may have landed a very prestigious director.

The Merlin Saga may have found its director.

And it’s none other than Ridley Scott.

According to Variety, the legendary filmmaker is circling The Merlin Saga – a new project Walt Disney Studios is working on, based on the books by T.A. Barron.

“Ridley Scott might have found his next directing project: The Merlin Saga for Disney,” they revealed. “Scott’s production company Scott Free is also in negotiations to produce along with Gil Netter. Philippa Boyens is the writer.”

It’s worth noting that currently, a deal has not been reached.

However, it’s thought by sources close to the production, that this will indeed be Ridley Scott’s next movie.

The Merlin Saga follows the story of a young Merlin as he becomes the legendary wizard we know from Arthurian legend… and while stories of a young Merlin have already been mined before within the BBC mini-series Merlin, it looks as though this could be one to watch.

“Merlin Saga is one of two films Disney is currently developing based on the Merlin character,” said Variety. “The studio is also working on a live-action ‘Sword in the Stone’, on which Scott also met with execs.”

But will Ridley Scott end up making it?

I can’t help thinking that this project is right up his street. After all, Scott has previously made a Robin Hood movie, and it feels like the kind of project which will keep him on his toes. That said, this is essentially a Disney project… and I wonder how Scott will manage Disney’s usually hands-on approach.

For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

But The Merlin Saga is sounding like a very interesting prospect.
