Although Iron Man 4 seems far from a certainty, Robert Downey Jr. hints that he isn’t quite finished with the character… and there may be more yet to come. But does that mean another solo outing for the Invincible Iron Man?
It’s no secret that Robert Downey Jr. will be reprising the role of Tony Stark (or Iron Man to his friends) in Marvel’s upcoming Avengers sequel, Age of Ultron. And with yet-another sequel on the cards, it seems he’s still got plenty of time to clamber back into the Iron Man suit. But after the phenomenal success of Iron Man 3, will Robert Downey Jr. head off for another solo outing?
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 49-year-old Avengers star revealed that he isn’t quite finished with Tony Stark… and he may have a few tricks up his sleeve, yet.
“I’m sure we’ll ride that thing,” he said. “You’ve got to surf that all the way in to shore.”
No, we’re not entirely sure what he’s on about, either. It may be a little cryptic, but the implication is that Robert Downey Jr. is in this for the long haul… and he’s willing to take Iron Man all the way to its natural conclusion – whatever that may be.
Of course, I can’t help thinking that Marvel would be keen to keep him on board. After all, he’s become the public face of the Marvel franchise, and has helped to popularise the comic book movie beyond comic book fans.
But he remains rather humble about his involvement in launching the franchise.
“I think I was at the forefront of something that was coming into being,” he said. “I think it has carried me as much as I have informed it. That’s the healthy way to look at it. It’s so easy to become inflated by the successes, but what they really are are long, strong trends. It’s just another wave.”
Surfing metaphors aside, it looks as though he’s no longer denying the existence of Iron Man 4… and that’s definitely a huge shift in the tides. After numerous denials and even the studio claiming that it’s not being planned, I can’t help thinking there’s a bit more to it than that.
Could we see another Iron Man sequel in the near future? It’s not impossible. But I get the feeling we may have a bit of a wait.
