The next Spider-Man movie won’t be heading to cinemas until 2017 but it looks as though we may have some idea of what the title will be…
According to Umberto Gonzales (formerly of the Latino Review), the new Marvel solo film will likely link him to Marvel’s Avengers.
“I’m being told the working title for the untitled Spider-Man standalone film is Spider-Man: The New Avenger,” he said via Instagram. “Again, it’s Sunday so take with grain pending further confirmation.”
Of course, Gonzalez is keen to stress that this is unconfirmed… so we should take it with a pinch of salt for the time being. And I get the feeling that’s probably wise.
But could there be a hint of truth to this rumoured new name?
It certainly wouldn’t be the first time Marvel has banked on the Avengers connection to try and sell one of their superheroes. Just look at Captain America: The First Avenger. But will Peter Parker’s next outing follow suit?
If true, this rumoured title certainly makes a lot of sense. It follows in the footsteps of the First Avenger, establishes a new link between Spidey and The Avengers and might even help to differentiate the new ‘Spider-Man’ movie from its predecessors.
After all, Marvel and Sony could do without any association to The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Of course, it’s a lot different to what we might expect. After all, we’ve come to expect a certain pattern when naming Spider-Man projects – mostly The Amazing Spider-Man or Spectacular Spider-Man.
But could breaking away from this pattern be a smart move?
It’s certainly a more startling name – establishing the new film as something entirely separate and new. And that’s exactly why The New Avenger sounds like it could be the real deal.
But for now, we’ll have to wait and see.
The next Spider-Man movie heads to cinemas on 28 July 2017.
