It looks as though Joss Whedon may not be sticking around for Avengers: Infinity War… but who could take his place? Apparently, that might be the Russo Brothers.
According to Badass Digest, Joe and Anthony Russo – directors of the recent Captain America: The Winter Soldier – are currently in talks with Marvel for the new Avengers sequel.
“I’ve been told that the Russo Brothers are in talks to direct Avengers 3 and possibly 4,” they explain. “Sources tell me that they’re the favorites of Marvel right now and that they are the guys Kevin Feige wants to pick up the mantle from Joss Whedon.”
But is Joss Whedon really leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
At this stage, it’s uncertain. But even if the Russo Brothers take over on Avengers: Infinity War there’s nothing to stop Joss Whedon acting as a creative consultant… and I wouldn’t mind betting we see his name in the credits as a producer.
But with a confirmation from Deadline Hollywood, it looks as though the Russos may have clinched the job.
“The Russos are building up their Marvel cred with this all-star outing,” they say of Civil War. “I keep hearing they will step up to the ultimate Marvel all-star team and take the reins of The Avengers franchise from Joss Whedon, possibly with that next film that will shoot back to back.”
Of course, this assumes that Joss Whedon won’t be returning… but at this stage, we have no idea. After all, with Avengers Assemble and Age of Ultron under his belt, Marvel will be no doubt keen to hold onto him. Whether or not he wants to remain is another matter entirely.
Obviously, the Russo brothers taking the helm of the Avengers franchise could mark a very distinct change in the tides… certainly in terms of style. And with tension in the ranks among the Avengers, perhaps it’s a good time to get some fresh, new ideas.
And then there’s the small matter of which Avengers will remain…
With Civil War on the horizon, it’s a perfect time to change up the Avengers roster. And that could mean cutting some of our favourite superheroes from the team. Of course, for now we’ll have to see who makes it through… but either way, it seems they’ll answer to the Russo Brothers.
