It’s often derided as the worst of the Spider-Man trilogy… and now director Sam Raimi admits that Spider-Man 3 really was as bad as we thought.
It’s no secret that Spider-Man 3 is looked upon with disgust amongst comic book movie fans. The plot was paper thin, the dialogue was shocking and Sony made the terrible mistake of trying to pack way too much into a single movie.
But while the fans often discuss how appalling the film really is, director Sam Raimi has admitted that he agrees.
During an interview with Pajiba.com, the disgraced comic book movie director admits that Spider-Man 3 wasn’t exactly his finest hour…
“It’s a movie that just didn’t work very well,” he said. “I tried to make it work, but I didn’t really believe in all the characters, so that couldn’t be hidden from people who loved Spider-Man. If the director doesn’t love something, it’s wrong of them to make it when so many other people love it.”
Of course, Raimi wasn’t the only person who didn’t really love Spider-Man 3. And while the prospect of bringing Venom to the big screen promised so much, it simply failed to deliver.
And Raimi has some ideas about why that is…
“I think [raising the stakes after Spider-Man 2] was the thinking going into it,” he said. “And I think that’s what doomed us. I should’ve just stuck with the characters and the relationships and progressed them to the next step and not tried to top the bar…”
It’s one of the most well-known criticisms of Spider-Man 3 – that they simply tried too hard. Everything had to be bigger and better… but the movie failed to live up to the promise.
If you ask me, it’s a trap that Sony seems to easily fall into. And with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 following a similar trajectory, I can’t help wondering whether Sam Raimi was really the only person to blame.
“Directors don’t like to talk about their bad films,” he said… and later described the movie as ‘awful’.
But can Spider-Man steer clear of these problems in future instalments? For now, we’ll have to wait and see…
