After Shazam was recently announced among DC’s upcoming superhero slate, it looked as though he might eventually team up with the Justice League of America. But is that entirely off the cards?
It’s no secret that Dwayne Johnson will be starring as Black Adam in the upcoming Shazam movie. But will he get the chance to square off against the Justice League? It looks as though the man himself isn’t so sure…
Taking to Twitter, it looks as though The Rock has dropped a pretty big hint that Shazam might just be entirely separate to the upcoming Justice League slate.
Of course, the hash-tag #Independence certainly seems to suggest that the Shazam movie is entirely separate to DC’s other superhero movies. And if you ask me, that’s probably a good thing. After all, Shazam’s origins wouldn’t mesh well with the grittier tone of other upcoming DC movies.
And in an earlier interview with Entertainment Weekly, New Line president Toby Emmerich revealed that Shazam is likely to have a very different tone to the rest of the DC universe.
“It feels to me like Shazam will have a tone unto itself,” he said. “It’s a DC comic, but it’s not a Justice League character, and it’s not a Marvel comic. The tone and the feeling of the movie will be different from the other range of comic book movies.”
Obviously, this remains to be seen… after all, with a release date sometime in 2019, it looks as though we’ve got a long wait to find out. But personally, I can’t help thinking that it makes a lot of sense. Shazam isn’t exactly the hard-boiled, gritty superhero that the Justice League seems to be calling for… and with a much lighter, more mystical tone, it’s something that’s likely to jar with the tone of Ben Affleck’s Batman.
But for now, we’ll just have to wait and see.
