Has Simon Pegg logged on for Ready Player One?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 46-year-old actor and self-confessed geek is in talks for a role in Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of ‘Ready Player One’.
“Simon Pegg is in negotiations to join the cast of Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi film Ready Player One,” they revealed. “Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke and Ben Mendelsohn also star in the big-screen adaptation of the best-seller.”
But who would Simon Pegg be playing?
“[Simon] Pegg will play Orgen Morrow,” they revealed, “the co-creator of Oasis.”
Tye Sheridan leads the cast as Parzival – a teenager who finds himself competing in an online treasure hunt inside a virtual world known as Oasis. Helping him is Olivia Cooke as Art3mis, a fellow hunter and online whiz.
And the grand prize? Ownership of Oasis itself.
Oasis was originally created by James Donovan Halliday, along with his friend Ogden Morrow… and after Halliday’s death, the contest to find a hidden Easter Egg within the virtual world was revealed.
“Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow are behind the movie, which adapts the best-selling sci-fi novel by Ernest Cline and is in the midst of casting as it heads towards a June start.”
But is SImon Pegg the right fit?
His geek credentials certainly give him a bit of an edge when it comes to playing the Steve Wozniak of Ready Player One and after appearances in Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness he’s no stranger to big screen sci-fi.
Ready Player One is being produced by Steven Spielberg, and is based on the critically-acclaimed novel by Ernest Cline. Donald De Line, Kristie Macosko Krieger and Dan Farah will also produce under the Amblin Partners banner.
Ready Player One heads to cinemas on 30 March 2018.
