Spider-Man may have already found its Peter Parker… as Asa Butterfield reportedly leads the shortlist.
According to the Latino Review, 18-year-old Asa Butterfield is Marvel’s top choice for everyone’s favourite web-slinger.
“Asa Butterfield Leads the Bunch,” they revealed. “We have reached out to Asa’s reps who have given us a ‘no comment’. We have also reached out other industry sources who have confirmed that he is indeed the front runner including one who believed that he already had bagged the role.”
Of course Asa Butterfield recently emerged as being on the Spider-Man shortlist… and according to their source, “Marvel had liked him since day one.” But there were plenty of other impressive names being seen for the role, including Nat Wolff, Tom Holland, Timothee Chalamet and Liam James.
Has Asa Butterfield beaten them all to the role?
It’s no secret that Spider-Man is going to have to be cast fairly quickly. After all, he’s expected to make an appearance in Captain America: Civil War… and with a 2016 release date, filming is just around the corner.
Obviously, being the frontrunner doesn’t guarantee Butterfield the role. And let’s face it – Marvel has a history of pulling casting choices seemingly out of thin air. Just look at Chris Evans, who was never mentioned on the Captain America shortlist.
Still, with Butterfield’s nerdy charm, things are looking good for the would-be Peter Parker.
But can he pull off a convincing Spider-Man?
Either way, I get the feeling we’ll find out soon enough. And let’s face it – the kid has some acting chops. Peter Parker may be heading back to high school, but this could be the Spider-Man we’ve all been waiting for.
The next Spider-Man movie heads to cinemas on 28 July 2017.
