After taking over from J.J. Abrams at the helm of the Star Trek reboots, writer and director Robero Orci wants Star Trek 3 in cinemas by summer 2016.
It’s been quite a rollercoaster for Roberto Orci – writing the follow-up to Star Trek Into Darkness only to be tipped to take over the director’s chair. But it seems that might only be the tip of the iceberg after Paramount reportedly wants a summer 2016 release… giving Orci around 18 months to successfully direct his first feature film.
According to the folks at Trek Movie, the recently submitted script has been met with plenty of enthusiasm at Paramount… and they want to start filming as early as February 2015.
“It appears that the script has met with a warm welcome at Paramount,” they said. “The studio is moving forward with the project and have set production to start in mid February, 2015 (currently pencilled in for February 15). Also, while there was some question about it earlier this summer, all indications are that Roberto Orci has been tapped to direct the film.”
And that’s not all – it looks as though Star Trek 3 could be in cinemas by 2016.
“Paramount and Orci are now discussing various Summer 2016 dates,” they reveal. “An official announcement will be coming soon.”
Of course, that’s not a huge turnaround for such a CGI-heavy production… and if Roberto Orci is set to direct, I have to wonder how well he’s going to cope with such a tight deadline for his directorial debut.
Still, it’s encouraging that paramount are pleased with the script. But what will Star Trek 3 be about? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
