The first Star Wars spin-off movie has found a new writer – Cinderella scribe, Chris Weitz.
It’s no secret that writer Gary Whitta has already submitted the first draft for the upcoming Star Wars spin-off… and subsequently exited the project. But while rumours linked Simon Kinberg to the ambitious project, it looks as though Lucasfilm has found someone else to take over.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, 45-year-old Chris Weitz is poised to take over scriptwriting duties on the upcoming Star Wars spin-off.
“The Star Wars stand-alone movie that Gareth Edwards will direct has found a new writer,” they revealed. “Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the latest scribe headed to a galaxy far, far away is Chris Weitz, whose credits include the 2002 film About A Boy and Disney’s upcoming Cinderella.”
Of course, little is known about the first Star Wars spin-off… except that it will be directed by Gareth Edwards. And with the screenplay’s first draft already submitted, it seem that their new writer has brought on board for a second opinion.
Chris Weitz is perhaps best known for adapting About a Boy for the big screen alongside his brother, Paul Weitz… but has also co-written the 1999 teen comedy American Pie as well as Twilight sequel, New Moon. And more importantly, he recently penned the script for the upcoming live-action Cinderella, which presumably led to Disney hiring him for the galaxy far, far away.
But what does this mean for the galaxy far, far away?
Unfortunately, we’re not sure. There are still practically no details about the upcoming spin-off… and when it comes to the actual plot, we’re completely in the dark. And while casting is reportedly underway, the rumours we’ve seen so far give us very little to go on.
Of course, we’ve also heard plenty of rumours suggesting a plot for the film, including bounty hunters, smugglers and a daring raid to secure the plans for the original Death Star. But will this be anywhere near what we finally see on the big screen?
We’ll just have to wait and see… but for now, it remains a mystery.
The first Star Wars spin-off heads to cinemas on 16 December 2016.
