After getting out first glimpse of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in the awesome first teaser trailer, it looks as though we’re now able to put some names to those new faces.
In a rather awesome move, director J.J. Abrams and producer Kathleen Kennedy have unveiled some of the Star Wars VII character names… by releasing some exclusive new trading cards to the folks at Entertainment Weekly.
Based on the Topps Trading Cards that were produced during the original trilogy, they give us a retro look at some of those teaser trailer scenes… and just happen to reveal some of the new characters’ names.
“We’re getting to know the characters played by John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, and Oscar Isaac, as well as that shadowy figure in the snow with the crossguard lightsaber,” they explain.
And thanks to the trading card titles, we get our first look at who’s who in the galaxy far, far away…
#11 – BB-8 on the move.
#53 – Poe Dameron in his X-Wing.
#67 – Kylo Ren ignites his Lightsaber.
#74 – Rey on her Speeder.
#76 – Finn on the run.
#81 – Stormtroopers prepare for battle.
#88 – X-Wings in formation.
#96 – The Millennium Falcon.
But what does that mean for our new characters? Well, it looks as though we can put some names to the faces… and that includes the cute new ball droid – BB-8. On top of that, we can now refer to Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, with Daisy Ridley as Rey and John Boyega as Finn.
Of course, the matter of who is behind the hood of that mysterious Sith-like figure remains firmly under wraps… but we can now refer to him by his character name – Kylo Ren. Will it turn out to be Adam Driver? For now, we have to wait and see.
There are still plenty of new characters yet to be named – those played by Andy Serkis and Max Von Sydow, for example. But I get the feeling that we might just get more of these cool trading cards in time… perhaps after the release of another trailer.
But for now, one big question remains – why have Daisy Ridley and John Boyega’s character surnames been left out?
Over the last few months (and even before that), we’ve heard numerous rumours suggesting that Daisy Ridley could be playing the daughter of Han and Leia… and so perhaps revealing her surname would give the game away.
But what about John Boyega?
I get the feeling he could well be related to another famous Star Wars face… but is he a Calrissian? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens heads to cinemas on 18 December 2015.
