After revealing that the Star Wars VII trailer would only appear in selected theatres across the US, it looks as though it will actually appear online this weekend.

It was revealed via the official Star Wars Facebook Page, that the elusive trailer – confirmed as just 88 seconds long by director J.J. Abrams – will appear online on Friday…. as well as in those thirty US cinemas.

“We are excited to announce that the first teaser for Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be available online this Friday,” said the announcement.

But where will we be able to see it? That was quickly clarified on the official Star Wars Twitter account. “The Force is with you on #BlackFriday when #TheForceAwakens teaser hits @iTunesTrailers.”

Of course, Lucasfilm previously announced that the upcoming short teaser would appear only in a selection of thirty cinemas across the USA – in select Regal, Cinemark and AMC venues.

This led to many international fans (myself included) wondering exactly why we’d been left out… and more importantly, when we’d get to see the first teaser.

But now it seems that the trailer will also head online via iTunes Trailers. But was this planned all along, or a reaction to the fan outcry? I can’t help thinking it’s the latter, but I’m not sure we’ll ever truly find out.

Now, there’s already been numerous reports of different trailer variations. But Lucasfilm has already confirmed that the online trailer is exactly the same as the one in theaters on Friday.

What time will the highly anticipated trailer hit? For now, we really have no idea. But it certainly makes sense to appear online at a time that will reach the largest possible audience. According to Slashfilm, that’s likely to be sometime mid-morning on the American West Coast.

“That will give fans in all time zones a chance to see it first in the theater, then go home and watch it again and again,” they explain. “Also, that’s the evening for Europe which will cover a nice big cross section of the globe.”

Bounty Hunters Star In First Star Wars Spin-Off?

As for what the trailer will reveal… well, we just have to wait and see. There have already been plenty of rumours that we’ll get a first glimpse at numerous Star Wars VII characters and even a Millennium Falcon flyby. But it won’t be long until we find out.

Star Wars VII appears in cinemas from 18 December 2015.
