Although Lando Calrissian won’t appear in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it seems he could still return to the galaxy far, far away.
During an interview with Vanity Fair, co-writer Lawrence Kasdan (who also wrote ‘The Empire Strikes Back’) revealed that Lando isn’t down and out just yet.
“Right now, there’s no Lando Calrissian in this movie,” he said, confirming that Billy Dee Williams won’t get a cameo in Star Wars VII. “But Lando I don’t think is finished in any way, shape, or form.”
But what does this mean for the galaxy far, far away?
Well, there’s always the possibility of an appearance in Star Wars VIII. After all, original actor Billy Dee Williams has expressed time and time again that he’s open to returning.
And after appearing in a recent episode of Star Wars Rebels, I get the feeling that Disney and Lucasfilm would be happy to see him back.
But could we see him recast in one of the Star Wars spin-offs?
Star Wars: Rogue One has been revealed to be set before the events of the original trilogy – following the story of the Rebel Alliance in their attempts to get hold of the original Death Star plans.
Could a young Lando Calrissian factor into this somehow?
It honestly wouldn’t surprise me – after all, the now respectable Cloud City Administrator has led the life of a scoundrel… and that’s exactly how he got tangled up with Han Solo in the first place.
But will we see him again as a younger man?
Either way, I think there’s hope that we’ll be seeing Lando in some capacity in the next generation of the galaxy far, far away. And if I were Billy Dee Williams, I wouldn’t hang up that rather dashing cloak just yet.
Star Wars The Force Awakens heads to cinemas on 18 December 2015.
