It’s official – Jared Leto, Will Smith and Tom Hardy have been cast in Suicide Squad with Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne joining them.
In an official announcement by Warner Bros. it was confirmed that rumours of Jared Leto starring as The Joker are entirely true. And with Will Smith and Tom Hardy joining him on screen, it looks as though all the players are set for DC’s big screen Suicide Squad. But who will they each be playing?
It looks as though recent rumours have proved to be true, with Leto taking Heath Ledger’s place as the all-new Joker. And with Will Smith as Deadshot, it’s all lining up very nicely.
The full official casting list is as follows:
Jared Leto – The Joker
Will Smith – Deadshot
Tom Hardy – Rick Flag
Margot Robbie – Harley Quinn
Jai Courtney – Boomerang
Cara Delevingne – Enchantress
Of course, all of these names have been rumoured to join Suicide Squad for some time… but while we all assumed that Margot Robbie and Cara Delevingne were up for the same part – the role of The Joker’s girlfriend, Harley Quinn – it looks as though there’s room for two women on the squad.
But what about those rumours of an appearance by Lex Luthor?
“According to insiders, Jesse Eisenberg is also in talks to play Lex Luthor in the film, a role he will first play in ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’,” said Variety. “Though the status of his deal is unknown.”
Of course, this would provide DC with the perfect opportunity to tie Suicide Squad into their wider cinematic universe… and I can’t help thinking that perhaps Eisenberg’s deal is only a matter of time. After all, he’s Superman’s most iconic villain and placing him alongside The Joker on the big screen is surely a win-win situation.
“The Warner Bros. roots are deep on this one,” said Warner Bros. president Greg Silverman. “We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under David Ayer’s amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero.”
But who will lead this band of miscreants as they carry out suicide missions for the US government? If it’s anything like the comic books, that would be Amanda Waller. And it seems the search is still on to find her.
“The studio’s shortlist of actresses being eyed for the role includes Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Oprah Winfrey, whom sources say would be WB’s first choice for the part.”
Will we see Oprah Winfrey in her first ever comic book movie? For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but it could be the weirdest, most inspired casting, ever.
Suicide Squad appears in cinemas on 4 August 2016.
