Suicide Squad Still Looking For Final Member

Director David Ayer is yet to find his Rick Flagg.

24th January 2015 by Ryan Leston

Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad is yet to find its final member… as DC searches for a replacement to star as Rick Flagg Jr.

After the high-profile exit of Tom Hardy from DC’s upcoming Suicide Squad movie, it looks as though the studio is hard-pressed to find someone who wants to step into his shoes. But with Jake Gyllenhaal passing on the role, can they find a replacement?

It looks as though Jon Bernthal and Joel Edgerton could be in the running.

According to Cinema Blend, Suicide Squad will replace Tom Hardy with one of two actors – Jon Bernthal or Joel Edgerton.

“A source with knowledge of the project has told us that Suicide Squad is now looking at Joel Edgerton and Jon Bernthal for the role of Rick Flag,” they revealed. “Bernthal’s name actually was floated for a possible role in the ensemble feature in November, so it’s possible that director David Ayer has just continued to lobby for him.”

Of course, writer and director David Ayer worked with Jon Bernthal on his latest feature film Fury just last year… in which Bernthal played one of Brad Pitt’s fellow tank bros. If he was going to bring anyone along with him, Jon Bernthal would make a lot of sense.

But what about Joel Edgerton?

Perhaps most famous for the role of Uncle Owen in the Star Wars prequels, he recently starred as the main antagonist in Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings. But is he really right for the role of Rick Flagg?

Of the two, I can’t help rooting for Jon Bernthal… even if Edgerton did play Tom Hardy’s brother in the American sports drama, Warrior. But then, both names make a lot of sense. From what we’ve been hearing, Rick Flagg Jr. is not supposed to be a main character – at least, he shouldn’t be overly memorable. And both these actors have the working power to carry on at the side lines without pulling attention away from the main stars of the show – Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto.

Jake Gyllenhaal Turns Down Suicide Squad

Will either of them end up landing the role? For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But it looks as though the Suicide Squad may be taking shape.

Suicide Squad heads to cinemas on 5 August 2016.

Who would you like to see in the Suicide Squad? Will Joel Edgerton or Jon Bernthal make a great Rick Flagg? Let us know what you think in the comments below…
