While the world awaits the next big Marvel release, it looks as though Tim Burton might not be quite so fussed… as he admits he’s bored of the same-old superhero formula.
During an interview with Yahoo! Movies UK, the 56-year-old eccentric British director admitted that he’s a little bored with the formulaic nature of Marvel’s comic book movies.
“Marvel, they have their thing and there’s a certain formula to it all which seems to still be working, but how many times can you say ‘you’re wearing a funny costume’ with the tights and stuff?”
Of course, this wouldn’t be the first time we’ve heard filmmakers complain of superhero fatigue… and it’s certainly something that studios seem to be taking seriously. After all, while Burton might not be impressed with marvel’s overall approach, you have to hand it to them – Marvel dabbles in a lot of very distinct styles when it comes to their movies. Just look at the differences between the fantasy epic of ‘Thor’ and ‘The Dark World’ when compared to the likes of ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’.
But perhaps that’s not enough of a difference for some…
“That’s been going on for 20 years now,” he added. “Yes, we all know that superheroes are damaged individuals. Maybe we need to see a happy superhero? I think there is [another superhero film in me], but I don’t know.”
“You think we need more superhero movies? It keeps on going. It’s amazing how long it’s been going for and it just keeps getting stronger and stronger. Someday people will get sick of it.”
I have to admit, that seems a little rich coming from the man who gave us a very gothic-looking ‘Batman’. Still, the concept of a ‘happy superhero’ is an interesting one. Maybe Burton could give that some thought in the coming years. But I think we’d all rather see him give Batman another run…
