Although little is known about the upcoming Tron sequel, it looks as though we may have a title – Tron: Ascension.
Walt Disney Studios still hasn’t confirmed that Tron 3 is in development… and the entire project seems to be kept firmly under wraps. But with rumours that Joseph Kosinski will be back to direct, it looks as though another Tron sequel is on the cards.
And now we even have a name…
According to Production Weekly, the much-rumoured Tron sequel will be heading out to Vancouver for filming later this year.
And if recent reports are to be believed, we’ll see Garrett Hedlund return as Sam Flynn – son of original ‘Tron’ protagonist, Kevin Flynn. But it’s been all quiet when it comes to the return rest of the cast… including Olivia Wilde and Jeff Bridges.
But what does this new title tell us?
It’s no secret that Tron: Legacy attempted to tackle some rather heady subjects in the last five minutes of the film – specifically, when Quorra, a new kind of program created inside the system, is released along with Sam Flynn into the real world.
But does this have anything to do with Tron: Ascension?
The name alone certainly implies some kind of connectivity… after all, Quorra was the first program to ‘ascend’ into physical existence. But will Olivia Wilde return to the role?
That much is unclear… but back in 2013, director Joseph Kosinki briefly discussed his ideas for the third film. And it sounds as though it may tie it all together.
“The fundamental idea of the movie is something I’m very excited about,” he said. “It delivers on the ideas that we set up in Legacy, especially at the end in the last five minutes.”
But will the original actors be on board? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
