TRON 3 could make it to the big screen sooner than we thought.
In fact, it’s reportedly starting filming later this year.
That’s right folks – we’ve heard rumours of another sequel for some time, but it looks as though the project may finally be gathering momentum. And according to a new report, TRON 3 will start filming this year.
But do we really need another TRON movie?
According to Van City Buzz, TRON 3 has finally been green lit and will begin filming by the end of the year.
“Walt Disney Pictures has green lighted the third film in the TRON series,” they reveal. “Filming is scheduled to begin on October 5, 2015. At this time, only Garrett Hedlund has been confirmed to return to the cast.”
But this isn’t the first time we’ve heard hints of another sequel…
Shortly after TRON: Legacy was released, there were rumours that Disney was considering expanding on the franchise with a third instalment. But while we’ve heard very little since, it all started to resurface last week when musician Giorgio Moroder revealed that he’s working on music for a new game…
“I’m going to meet Skrillex next week when I’m back,” he told Clash. “I’m doing the music for a game for Disney’s TRON. We have about five themes, electronic stuff and let’s see if he’s interested in remixing or re-working one of the songs.”
But what game is he talking about?
After Moroder’s comments, many fans assumed he meant an upcoming videogame. But let’s be realistic – it’s been over four years since the release of TRON: Legacy. Another videogame at this stage seems rather badly times.
Unless there’s another movie in the works.
Of course, he never actually mentioned a videogame, either… and this could mean that he’s actually scoring a portion of the film itself. After all, the original film showed us plenty of programs forced to take part in the brutal and gladiatorial games. Could Moroder provide the music for such a game?
Following the Van City Buzz report, I can’t help thinking that they’re onto something… and it looks as though TRON 3 may actually be happening after all. But we must point out that none of this has been confirmed by Disney.
At least, for the time being.
But should a third TRON movie be made?
After TRON: Legacy, I’m not so sure. After all, as a long-time fan of the original movie, I was left feeling rather let down by the recent sequel. Don’t get me wrong – the visuals were an absolute delight and the film certainly looked the part.
But the storyline just didn’t live up to expectations.
Having secured both Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner to return to the world of TRON, it felt as though Disney wasted the opportunity to make something truly great. The return of CLU was a masterstroke… but Quorra and the ISOs simply felt out of place.
There was just no need to shoehorn existential issues into the story.
And let’s face it – with an impressive sequel in the form of the videogame TRON 2.0, perhaps they should have adapted this into the sequel we all wanted.
But could TRON 3 redeem the franchise? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
TRON 3 reportedly begins filming in October 2015.
