Valerian Gets An Explosive New Trailer

An impressive new trailer for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets has exploded online… and it looks as though director Luc Besson is back on form.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets looks impressive.

Most impressive.

Appearing in the impressive new trailer, Dane De Haan stars as Agent Valerian – a human special operative charged with keeping order among the human territories, alongside his partner, Agent Laureline (played by Cara Delevingne). Wondering what to expect? Think The Fifth Element with modern CGI and special effects.

And this new trailer should tell you all you need to know.

An explosive sci-fi action sequence quickly establishes Valerian and Laureline as a pair who are really something special – these aren’t just ordinary guardians of the peace. There’s an almost super-soldier quality as they tackle their mission dressed (presumably) as tourists…

Essentially, they’re the Jason Bourne’s of this strange new galaxy.

And they have a new mission…

Alpha, the City of a Thousand Planets, is in peril. The usually peaceful city is based around the exchange of knowledge between a thousand different planets – all aiding each other for the common good.

It’s a noble cause… and one which seems to have riled someone up.

For some reason, the city is under attack by someone who wants to destroy it all. And that’s where Valerian and Laureline come in. Asked for their help, they become the new guardians of the city. And their first mission is essentially to save them all.

Not exactly a small feat.

Still, this new trailer gives us a quick look at what we can expect… and much like Luc Besson’s earlier films, it’s full of vibrant colour and explosive action. After Lucy, it feels like a real return to form for the director, and I can’t wait to see more of those thousand planets.

You already get a real sense of the mingling interstellar community in the new trailer… and it really could be amazing.

Of course, we also get a glimpse of Rihanna as an alien singer who can transform into American singing icons – a cool glimpse at the remarkable talents of just one of the citizens of Alpha. But there’s still no sign of the rest of its stellar cast – Ethan Hawke, John Goodman, and Rutger Hauer to name just a few.

“You’ll have to wait and see them,” Besson told Entertainment Weekly. “To be honest, I could have made a hundred different trailers from this one movie.”

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets stars Dane De Haan, Cara Delevingne, Ethan Hawke, John Goodman, Rutger Hauer, Clive Owen, Rihanna and Kris Wu.

Luc Besson wrote and directed the movie based on an original comic.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets heads to cinemas on 26 July 2017.

What do you think of Valerian’s new trailer? Will it be anywhere near as good as The Fifth Element? Let us know what you think in the comments below…
