Will The Red Skull Return In Captain America 3?

Hugo Weaving’s Red Skull was a firm fan favourite, but we’ve seen nothing of him since Captain America: The First Avenger. But could he appear in the upcoming Civil War?

Hugo Weaving as Captain America villain, The Red Skull.

Although Hugo Weaving’s Red Skull proved to be a firm fan favourite, we’ve seen nothing of him since The First Avenger. But could he appear in Marvel‘s upcoming Civil War?

It’s a question we’ve heard a million times before – when will Hugo Weaving return as the Red Skull? But so far, we’ve not seen so much as a hint towards his return. Of course, there’s no denying that his mysterious disappearance has fuelled rumours that he might make a rather awesome comeback. But could Civil War be the film that brings him back?

Will Pepper Potts Return In Captain America: Civil War?

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, they couldn’t resist asking him about his former Marvel role… and whether or not he’ll be back in the upcoming Captain America sequel. But his answer doesn’t exactly tell us much.

“I have absolutely no idea,” he said when asked if he’d be returning for Captain America: Civil War or even any other Marvel movie. “I haven’t talked to anyone about it, so, yeah, we’ll just have to wait and see. No idea at all.”

Of course, Weaving has previously claimed not to be too bothered about returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe… and has even claimed that he flat out doesn’t want to reprise the role.

“It’s not something I would want to do again,” he told Collider. “I’m glad I did it.  I did sign up for a number of pictures and I suppose, contractually, I would be obliged to, if they forced me to, but they wouldn’t want to force someone to do it, if they didn’t want to.”

But has he had a change of heart?

Given the huge successes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s possible that they could have increased his fees a tad… as a little incentive. But why would they want him to return? Frankly, the Red Skull is without a doubt, Steve Rogers’ greatest nemesis. At least, on the big screen so far. And with The Winter Soldier presumably coming to his senses, perhaps Cap needs a suitable villain to go up against.

And then there’s HYDRA. Could the Red Skull have been pulling the strings all along? It certainly makes for a great way to tie everything up in a neat bow. And that would be a great way to top off Chris Evans’ run as Cap.

Will Hugo Weaving reprise the role? For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But despite his denials, I get the feeling he may know more than he’s letting on…

Do you think Hugo Weaving will return? Could the Red Skull be the main villain of Civil War? Let us know what you think in the comments below…
