It sounds as though Wonder Woman has found a female director.
It’s no secret that Wonder Woman is a fairly ambitious project – bringing one of DC‘s most iconic female superheroes to the big screen for the first time. And while Warner Bros. is keen to get a female director on board, it looks as though they may just have found the right woman for the job.
In an interview with Forbes, Lexi Alexander (director of ‘Punisher: War Zone’) revealed that she’s heard through the grapevine that WB has already landed a female director for ‘Wonder Woman’.
“Alexander said that she has not been approached by the studio, and has discouraged her managers from throwing her hat in the ring,” they explained… with Lexi Alexander herself adding: “I can’t say they wouldn’t consider me, but they haven’t reached out.”
“She said she heard Warner Bros. had been made an offer to another female director,” they added… though no indications were given as to who that might be. Although while she wouldn’t reveal any names, Alexander also explained why she wouldn’t pursue the job for herself… and I can’t help thinking that she makes a fair point.
“Imagine the weight on my shoulders,” she said. “How many male superhero movies fail? So now, we finally get Wonder Woman with a female director, imagine if it fails. And you have no control over marketing, over budget. So without any control, you carry the f**king weight of gender equality for both characters and women directors. No way.”
Of course, whether or not Alexander herself is up for the job, it sounds as though there’s a female director who has already taken the plunge. But who could it be? We’ve already seen the likes of Kathryn Bigelow, Mimi Leder and Michelle MacLaren tipped for the coveted job.
But have any of them signed up? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
