It’s been almost twelve years since the X-Files aired its final episode… and now the classic cult sci-fi series could return.
According to Fox executives Gary Newman and Dana Walden, the studio has been in talks with series creator Chris Carter to secure its return.
“It’s true that we’ve had some conversations on X-Files,” said Newman. “We’re hopeful of being able to bring that back at some point.”
“Gary and I both worked [at 20th Century Fox Television] through the entire run of The X Files,” explained Walden. “It was a great experience. We’ve maintained good relationships with Chris, David and Gillian. We’re very hopeful, but it’s hard. The actors are very busy. They have a lot going on. Chris has a lot on his plate, so it’s just trying to carve out the time.”
Of course, this news comes just days after Gillian Anderson encouraged X-Files fans to campaign to Fox in order to bring back the show… so I think she might be open to an X-Files comeback.
But the big problem is the duo’s schedules.
David Duchovny is currently starring in the upcoming NBC series Aquarius, while Gillian Anderson has a recurring role on the hit TV show Hannibal. And since both shows are run by Fox rivals NBC, they’d likely have to secure some kind of release from their commitments before going ahead with an X-Files revival.
As for Chris Carter, his latest project The After was recently declined by Amazon for their on-demand service… and so perhaps he’d be more inclined to revisit his older works. After all, he’s already expressed interest in making a sequel to the recent X-Files movie, I Want To Believe.
But is that how Fox will move forward with The X-Files?
After a frosty reception from critics, I can’t help thinking that another TV series is the way forward. After all, the recent hit show Fringe did rather well in The X-Files absence, and it’s clear that it takes plenty of inspiration from its predecessor.
But will Fox commit to a whole new series? For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But remember – the truth is out there.
