It looks as though X-Men: Apocalypse is set to continue the story of our younger X-Men from Days of Future Past… and Fox isn’t afraid to recast some familiar faces.
After such an incredible reception for X-Men: Days of Future Past it’s little surprise that 20th Century Fox is keen to keep the ‘X-Men’ juggernaut rolling. And with the next X-Men movie coming in 2016, it looks as though we might get a glimpse at some fan favourites… even if they aren’t quite the same as we remember them.
In a Q&A with Yahoo! Movies UK, the X-Men: Apocalypse writer explained that while Days of Future Past featured a time-bending dual cast, the sequel will likely focus on the younger mutants.
“The ‘X-Men’ film that we’re working on right now, everyone knows is ‘Apocalypse’, and that really follows the stories of the First Clas’ X-Men… In ‘Apocalypse’ it will really be the continuation of the ‘past’ of Days of Future Past,” he said. And it looks as though some of our favourite mutants may be getting a recast.
“If we included some of the original X-Men like Storm and Jean and Scott and others, then yea… we would have to recast them. Because ‘Apocalypse’ takes place a good twenty years before ‘X1’.”
“It’d be very hard to do,” he added. “Halle [Berry], Famke [Jansen], and Jimmy [Marsden] and others have done such wonderful jobs of bringing those characters to life,” said Kinberg. “But I also would have said before ‘First Class’ that there would be no actors who can stand alongside Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart.”
Of course, at this stage there’s no guarantee that the likes of Cyclops, Jean and Storm will even appear in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’. But if they do, it sounds as though the time-travelling antics of ‘Days of Future Past’ are all in the past… or future… whatever.
Either way, it means that they’ll have to be recast. And that means some fresh new faces to re-energise some of our favourite X-Men. Who they’d get to take over the roles remains to be seen. But it sounds like an exciting time for ‘X-Men’ fans.
