It’s official (sort of) – Al Pacino has been in talks with Marvel Studios about appearing in an upcoming comic book movie. But for which role?
In a brief interview with Happy Sad Confused Podcast, the 74-year-old screen legend was quick to admit that he’s already spoken to the studio… and he might even consider an offer, as long as it’s the right one.
“I’ve met with the Marvel guy,” he said… and it’s obvious he means Marvel Studio boss Kevin Feige. “It’s a Marvel how things happen [Laughs].”
Unfortunately, Pacino is very careful not to let anything slip… but from his comments so far, it seems clear that he’s definitely open to a comic book movie role. Quite which one remains to be seen, but I get the feeling Marvel would jump at the chance to get this screen legend in one of their upcoming movies.
“I would imagine that either there’s something he feels is right for me,” he added. “And if I feel…”
Of course, Pacino quickly stops short of finishing that sentence. After all, he doesn’t want to reveal too much. But after joking that he’s got Kevin Feige on the phone telling him to keep his mouth shut, it’s clear that he understands the way these things work. And it looks as though that’s all we’ll be getting… for the time being.
But does Marvel already have a role in mind?
I can’t help thinking that this meeting sounds as though it was at the request of Marvel Studios… and if that’s the case, then perhaps they approached Pacino with a role they’d like him to take on.
Of course, after Benedict Cumberbatch was cast in Doctor Strange, it seems like perfect timing for the studio to be on the lookout for a villain. And I can’t help wondering whether Pacino is being courted for the role of Baron Mordo – a powerful, yet villainous sorcerer who might prove to be Strange’s greatest threat.
Fans of the comic books should recognise this name… after all, Strange and Mordo have a long history of battling each other over various ancient artefacts. What makes this even more interesting is that Mordo has even bargained with his own soul in order to increase his power.
After his role in The Devil’s Advocate this is something Pacino should be entirely familiar with… even if he did play the devil the first time around.
But is this the role Marvel has in mind for him? For now, we’ll have to wait and see. Either way, it’s great to see Pacino seriously considering a role in an upcoming comic book movie. And it certainly shows just how far the comic book industry has come.
Of course, at this stage there’s no guarantee that Al Pacino will sign on the dotted line. And all we know so far is that he’s been in for a talk – no more, no less. Still, it’s exciting to think that a screen legend could be part of the MCU. Let’s just hope he gets a great role.
Doctor Strange heads to cinemas on 4 November 2016.
