Come on Barbie, let’s go party! Barbie has earned a staggering $1 billion in its first 17 days.
As well as clinching the #1 spot for its third consecutive weekend, Barbie has crossed an impressive milestone, earning over $1 billion globally.
According to Comscore, Barbie earned an impressive $53 million domestic this weekend, with a 43% drop from the previous weekend. To date, Barbie has made $459.38 million at the US box office.
It’s not just going to please studio executives either – these figures make Barbie the highest-grossing movie from a female director, ever.
Greta Gerwig, who directed the film, is best known for Lady Bird and Little Women, as well as making a name for herself as an actress in a number of mid-2000s mumblecore flicks.
Now, she’s the world’s highest-grossing female director.
Although Barbie was expecting big numbers from the off, nobody could have anticipated just how insanely popular the film has become. Taking pop culture by storm, the film, based on the classic Mattel toy line, has proved to be a huge draw on social media.
But while it wasn’t always a given, there’s at least one person who expected Barbie to go big… Margot Robbie.
“I think I told them that it’d make a billion dollars, which maybe I was overselling, but we had a movie to make, okay?!” she said about pitching the movie.
Thankfully, it turns out she was right on the money.
Barbie stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, alongside Kate McKinnon as Weird Barbie, America Ferrera as Gloria, Michael Cera as Allan, and Will Ferrell as the CEO of Mattel.
Barbie debuted in cinemas on July 21, 2023.
