Although Aquaman’s appearance in Batman V Superman still hasn’t been officially confirmed, some minor character details have begun to emerge from the briny depths…
Ever since Batman V Superman was first announced, DC fans have been left wondering which other superheroes will make a cameo appearance. And with Gal Gadot confirmed to appear as Wonder Woman, there’s plenty of reason to suspect a Justice League get together.
But will Aquaman be a part of it?
According to Schmoes Know, the King of Atlantis will be making an appearance… and he might even have already encountered the Man of Steel. But he’s likely to be getting a bit of a makeover.
“He’s going to look like a surfer essentially with tribal tattoos and all that jazz,” they reveal. “Nothing huge and pretty obvious but for those of you wondering, that’s what we hear he’ll look like in the film, which makes sense since it’s Momoa playing the character.”
Of course, Jason Momoa has long been linked to the role of Aquaman… but let’s be clear on this – Warner Bros. is yet to confirm his involvement. At this stage, it remains a rumour, even if it is a rather likely one.
What’s a lot less likely is what follows – that Aquaman has already appeared in the DC film universe.
“Aquaman sent the whales to save Supes and make sure he was okay, which makes sense considering we never actually see how Supes gets back to shore in the film. He sees the whales and then it cuts to him walking on land, which could mean thy were saving the swim back for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”
In a word – no. it just seems like an unnecessary connection that doesn’t hold enough weight to tie Aquaman into this world. And why was he even at the oil rig? It all just seems a bit too convenient for my liking.
But what about Aquaman’s new appearance?
It’s certainly a huge departure from Aquaman’s comic book incarnations. Often depicted as wearing an orange and green costume and wielding a trident, he’s has a number of different looks throughout the years… but in his most recent New 52 form, he’s taken on a decidedly grittier exterior.
In my opinion, making Aquaman a ‘surfer’ doesn’t necessarily mean that he won’t kick ass… and it could even lead up to a very similar story to the one presented in the New 52.
We know that Batman and Superman exist in a world that’s much harsher and grittier than most of the comic books… and for that reason, this grittier, macho Aquaman would fit right in alongside Clark and Bruce.
And Jason Momoa? I’ve long said that he’d be a perfect choice to bring Aquaman to the big screen – especially after his appearance on ‘Stargate: Atlantis’. He plays the tamed barbarian archetype really well and clearly has the screen presence to take on a super-powered role.
