It’s official – DeWanda Wise has joined Captain Marvel.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the She’s Gotta Have It star has signed up for the upcoming Captain Marvel movie.
“DeWanda Wise is on her way to the Marvel Universe,” they revealed. “Wise, known for her work on the Spike Lee Netflix series She’s Gotta Have It, is joining Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel in a supporting role.”
But who will she be playing?
Unfortunately, little is known about her role at the moment, but some fans have already been speculating that she could well play the Marvel hero, Monica Rambeau (aka Spectrum) – yet-another character who was once known by the name Captain Marvel.
And that would be interesting.
Brie Larsen will play Carol Danvers – a US pilot who, in the comic books, becomes a superhero after her DNA is fused with that of an alien during the explosion of a Kree device. It’s already been speculated that Jude Law will be playing Mar-Vell – once the original Captain who also happens to be an alien (hailing from the Kree homeworld of Hala). Adding yet-another character who was, at one time, called Captain Marvel would certainly be an interesting move… and akin to DC’s efforts to establish the Green Lantern Corps.
But will Monica Rambeau make an appearance?
Either way, DeWanda Wise is an excellent addition.
Known for her role in She’s Gotta Have It, Wise has an impressive resumé, including appearances in the likes of Boardwalk Empire, Law & Order and The Good Wife. She certainly has what it takes to bring Monica Rambeau to the big screen…
But whether or not this happens? We’ll have to wait and see.
Captain Marvel stars Brie Larsen, Jude Law, Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn.
Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck will direct the film, based on a script by Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet.
Captain Marvel heads to cinemas on 8 March 2019.
