Although The IT Crowd has officially shutdown, it looks as though Graham Linehan wants to make a Douglas Reynholm spin-off series…
During an interview with Digital Spy, the renowned comedy writer revealed that he’d love to create a series based on Matt Berry’s oddly loveable Douglas Reynholm.
“I’d really love to do a Douglas spinoff of The IT Crowd,” he said.
“I could easily spend an hour, or half an hour, with Douglas. He’s my favourite way of making fun of people that I really loathe, like Rupert Murdoch and Donald Trump. I basically just have happen to him all the things that I’d love to happen to them, and it’s basically a really enjoyable process.”
But will a Douglas Reynholm series actually happen? We shouldn’t get too excited just yet.
“This is just a half-formed thing at the moment,” he added. “And also I’ve got to wait and see if Matt would be interested in revisiting the character.”
“At the moment I’m happy to watch him in Toast [Of London],” he added. “And he’s obviously carving out a new role for himself as a writer and star as well, so I’ll stay out of the way at the moment and pounce when he’s taking a rest.”
But would Matt Berry be up for a return?
I can’t help thinking that he was born for this role… and with the incredibly positive reaction to his appearance in The IT Crowd it makes the thought of a solo spin-off series a very good idea.
After all, there’s still an IT-Crowd-shaped void on TV. Let’s just hope that Linehan strikes while the iron is hot. And that Matt Berry pounces on the opportunity.
