Edward Herrmann, best known for his roles in The Lost Boys and The Gilmore Girls has died aged 71.
The award-winning actor had recently been diagnosed with brain cancer according to his manager… and was in intensive care in a New York City hospital when he passed away on Wednesday Morning.
“Having valiantly braved months of treatment for brain cancer, Edward Herrmann passed peacefully at 8.30am today at Sloan Kettering hospital in New York City,” said his manager. “Besides being an accomplished actor, he was also a true gentleman and a scholar, as well as being incredibly kind and decent man. He will be sorely missed.”
In a tribute to his father, Herrmann’s son Rory said: “He was full of knowledge and kindness and goodness… he always wanted to share the great and beautiful things in life.”
Herrmann was perhaps best known for his portrayal of Richard Gilmore in The Gilmore Girls but also played Max – the mild-mannered head vampire – in Joel Schumacher’s horror classic The Lost Boys.
And let’s not forget his appearance as Herman Munster in the 1995 straight-to-TV film, Here Come The Munsters.
Of course, he also recently made several TV appearances on the likes of Grey’s Anatomy, The Good Wife and even the hit comedy series How I Met Your Mother.
To a whole generation of film and TV fans, Edward Herrmann was one of America’s favourite TV fathers… but his career spanned much more than that. A long-time character actor, he worked with some of the best in the business.
And most recently, he lent his voice to the Stratton Oakmont commercials in the big-screen blockbuster The Wolf of Wall Street.
But I’m sure many a geek will remember him for The Lost Boys. After all, it was the cult vampire film of a generation. And I’m sure Edward Herrmann will be sorely missed.
