After news of a Sinister Six spin-off, it looks as though Sony might be clutching at straws with the Spider-Man franchise… as a new rumour suggests that we may get a female-led Spider-Man spin-off.
According to the folks at Badass Digest, we may eventually see a number of female Spider-Man characters get their own team-up movie. But is that really the best Sony can do?
“Sony has plans for a female Spidey character to get her own movie,” they explain. “But what if the plans were for all the female Spidey characters to come together in one movie? That’s the premise of the project they’re calling Glass Ceiling – a team-up movie that would bring the female Spidey characters together.”
Obviously, this potential new project is very similar to the Sinister Six film – taking peripheral Spider-Man characters and placing them front and centre for their own spin-off film. But will this female-led Spider-Man movie really get green lit?
After The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was pushed back several year, I can’t help thinking that Sony is focusing on the wrong aspects of their faltering franchise. And it seems they’re not quite as confident in Spidey’s webslinging abilities as they should be.
Of course, there are plenty of female characters to choose from in the Spider-Man comic book franchise. But which will make the cut?
“There are not a ton of female superheroes that would be part of the Spider-Man package,” they explain. “The ones that spring immediately to mind are: The Black Cat, Silver Sable, Spider-Girl and Silk.”
There’s also the possibility of an appearance from Spider-Woman – the character that caused plenty of controversy recently, following a particularly racy comic book cover. But it remains unclear whether or not Sony holds the rights to this particular character. Either way, it looks as though there’s plenty of strong, female leads to choose from.
But can Sony drum up interest for characters that barely exist in the on-screen franchise?
We’ve already seen the introduction of Felicia Hardy in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and it’s certainly not a huge leap to see Felicity Jones headlining her own spin-off movie. But it might take a bit of work. After all, she’s yet to show any leaning towards a superhero lifestyle and has currently been sidelined to a more civilian role.
But will this movie really happen?
“It’s one of the ideas that Sony has been kicking around. As I’ve said before, I don’t think Sony even knows what they’re doing, so claiming that this is actually happening is incredibly premature. It’s an idea that’s out there.”
For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But I have to wonder why they’d opt for this film over a fully fleshed-out Venom movie.
