George Lucas Knows Nothing About Star Wars VII

Star Wars creator claims he knows nothing about the upcoming sequel.

January 19, 2015 by Ryan Leston

Darth Vader returns on Star Wars Rebels

Although George Lucas created the Star Wars franchise, he apparently has no idea what happens in the upcoming Star Wars VII.

During an interview with Screen Rant, the legendary Star Wars creator revealed that he really has no idea about the upcoming sequel… and there might be a good reason for that.

“I haven’t seen anything,” he said. “I mean I saw the trailer, it looks great, it looks interesting. But as I’ve said before: one thing I regret about Star Wars is that I never got to see it, you know? I never got to be blown away by the big ship coming over the thing, or anything. But this time I’m going to be, because I have no idea what they’re doing.”

Star Wars VII’s Female Stormtrooper

Of course, it’s encouraging news that Lucas has now seen the Star Wars VII trailer, after recently admitting that it had completely passed him by. But when it comes to the meat of the film, it looks as though he has no idea.

But perhaps that’s not such a big surprise.

Lucas is the first to admit that he hasn’t been actively involved in the development of The Force Awakens… even though he has previously met with director J.J. Abrams. It’s been assumed for some time that Lucas was consulting with Abrams about the direction of the new films. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that he knows the ins and outs of the movie.

But why is that so important?

Well, for one thing, George Lucas was reported to have spent at least a year researching and writing his very own Star Wars sequel trilogy, before the sale of Lucasfilm. And perhaps it gives us some indication that Disney has chosen to work from their own versions.

I mean, let’s face it – if Disney was working from George’s scripts, he’d know exactly what was going on in the movie. But even if they have abandoned George’s versions, that doesn’t mean that we won’t see elements of them in the final film.

Lando Returns In Star Wars Rebels

Of course, it’s difficult to say one way or the other… but I can’t help thinking that perhaps Disney has used elements of George’s scripts in their own independent work. And that could well be the best way forward.

But for now, we’ll have to wait and see.

Star Wars VII heads to cinemas on 18 December 2015.

Do you think George knows anything about ‘Star Wars VII’? Have Disney chosen its own path through the saga? Let us know what you think in the comments below…
