It’s been an exciting season so far for new Grimm, Trubel… and it’s about to get a whole lot more interesting. She may have kicked ass against the octopus-headed Wesen of last week’s episode… but now Chavez is back and it seems she’s after some Trubel. Literally!
Bundling Trubel into the back of a van, it looks as though she has a few words for her. And while Chavez seems to be looking to recruit the young Grimm, it’s unclear exactly what she’s up to. Of course, Trubel will likely learn that it’s unwise to trust a Steinadler – after all, we never truly know which side they’re on.
Perhaps Nick would be wise to keep his Steinadler Knife handy…
Of course, news of Nick’s predicament is spreading fast… and Bud is also back – as he excitedly bursts into the Spice Shop. It seems he’s seeking reassurance about the new Grimm in town, after their unintended introduction at the wedding. Hank assures him Trubel is not a threat, but when he learns that Nick has lost his powers, he’s obviously panicked.
Hurrying off, he claims that he’ll keep the disturbing news to himself. But can the gossipy Eisbiber hold his tongue?
Meanwhile, we’re introduced to this episode’s Wesen of the week… and it seems we’re in for a treat. A young, reluctant boxer named Clay soon turns out to be a Heftigauroch – A bull-like Wesen who is forced to wogue just before his fight, using some mercenary thugs to get his back up.
Of course, the Heftigauroch lets loose – knocking out his opponent in the first round. But is that really what he wants? It looks as though this one is a tale of corruption and scandal at the heart of the boxing industry.
After one of the thugs winds up dead, Nick and Hank’s attention is drawn to the gym. Suspecting Wesen, Nick sends in Trubel to check things out. Obviously, Trubel displays her own impressive boxing skills when she is pushed into the ring – skills which come in handy later on when she saves Nick and Hank from an attack by the boxing promoter… who also turns out to be Wesen.
It’s great to see Trubel holding her own, and she’s already becoming yet-another strong female lead in the show. It’s refreshing to see, but also highlights Nick’s vulnerability without his powers. Nick picks up on this when he talks to Hank after the attack, and he claims they can’t keep doing this. Is this the first clear sign he wants his powers back?
Either way, Renard, Monroe and Rosalee have a plan to help him…
Introduced to Elizabeth Lascelles at the Captain’s bedside, Monroe’s reaction to her youthful look is hilarious… and highlights an important question we’ve all been wondering. Just how on earth is the Captain’s mother so young-looking?
Renard explains to Elizabeth the importance of getting Nick’s powers back – he needs him to help keep his daughter hidden. Of course, she’s soon on board to protect her granddaughter. Convincing Monroe and Rosalee that they need her she claims; “To beat a Hexenbiest like Adalind, you need a Hexinbiest like me”. How awesome is she? It looks like she’s going to be everything I hoped; strong, sassy and a match for the devious Adalind.
After finding Adalind’s spell book, Elizabeth wonders whether she even realises the potential harm she could cause herself by casting the spell on Nick. Apparently it ties them together in unpredictable ways… and that’s likely to come into play sooner or later.
But will Elizabeth find a cure for Nick? What does this mean for both Nick and Adalind if she doesn’t? One thing’s for sure, it doesn’t look good.
As a side note, a rather interesting scientific explanation is offered in this episode to explain Nick’s ability to see Wesen. After his collapse, Juliette and Wu insist Nick gets checked out. The specialist explains that he may have a fourth or fifth cone in his eye, enabling him to see things the rest of us can’t.
And the loss of his Grimm powers is equally explained by science. Apparently he has a swelling behind his eye, restricting this vision. And it looks as though this was probably caused by Adalind’s potion.
The episode ends with a rather sinister turn, as a couple of men pull up opposite The Spice Shop and start putting on masks. Could trouble be brewing for Monroe and Rosalee? We’ll have to wait to find out.
