Tye Sheridan will play cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse. Now, original actor James Marsden says he thinks he’s the perfect choice.
The other day, Bryan Singer dropped a bombshell – three classic X-Men mutants would be heading to X-Men: Apocalypse and they’ve been recast. Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner and Alexandra Shipp are confirmed to appear as Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm.
But what does original Cyclops, James Marsden, think about that?
During an interview with HitFix at the Sundance Film Festival, original Cyclops James Marsden admitted his successor is a marvellous actor.
“I think he is a wonderfully talented actor, who blew me away in ‘Mud’,” said Marsden. “That movie, I’ve never seen a kid that young, be that present and be that powerful. So, I think he is a perfect fit and I congratulate him.”
Of course, Cyclops has been notably absent from the franchise since his death in X-Men: The Last Stand. And while numerous X-Men from the original franchise were rebooted in X-Men: First Class, poor old Cyclops was left out.
But thankfully, it looks as though that’s about to be fixed.
Tye Sheridan will presumably don the red-tinted specs for his appearance in X-Men: Apocalypse and with Jean Grey joining the cast too, we might even see a hint of their budding romance. But will Wolverine be sharpening his claws?
At this point, it’s assumed that Hugh Jackman will return for X-Men: Apocalypse but quite how he’ll fit into the story following the events of Days of Future Past remains to be seen.
Of course, the relationship between Cyclops and Wolverine was always fraught with tension. After all, Logan clearly wanted to muscle in on Scott’s woman. And with Jean Grey returning to the X-Men as well, we might get an awkward glimpse at what’s to come… even if they are both a lot younger than Wolverine.
For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but it looks as though Cyclops is in good hands.
X-Men: Apocalypse heads to cinemas on 19 May 2016.
