James Wan may be trading in fast cars for furious robots, as the young director enters talks for the upcoming Robotech movie.
According to Deadline, the increasingly popular action director has been approached to helm Sony’s upcoming Robotech film.
“Director James Wan is in early discussions with Sony Pictures to direct Robotech, the feature adaptation of the 1980s sci-fi anime series that is being eyed as a worldwide franchise,” they revealed.
But doesn’t he have enough on his plate already?
James Wan is already confirmed to direct The Conjuring 2 – the sequel to his hit original horror, which Warner Bros. is keen to turn into its own franchise. Expected for release in 2016, this will presumably be followed up by Aquaman.
“Wan is one of the hottest directors in town after Furious 7‘s success — it has grossed $1.3 billion so far in worldwide box office — and has a lot of offers on the table,” they added. “But I’m hearing he and Sony are going to try and make this work though the deal talks are in the beginning stages.”
Of course, this means a lot of work for Wan over the next few years… and if Sony are keen to have him on board, they may end up having to wait a few years until his schedule opens up a bit.
Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton are producing a script from Michael Gordon… and if James Wan joins the project, I can’t help thinking that Sony will have assembled quite a formidable team.
Of course, for now we’ll have to wait and see. But James Wan is in talks, at least.
