You Were Never Really Here just got a grim new trailer.
And Joaquin Phoenix is like a modern-day Travis Bickle.
You Were Never Really Here tells the story of Joe – a contract killer (played by Joaquin Phoenix) who finds himself pulled into a conspiracy while trying to save a teenager from a life of prostitution. If that sounds familiar, it’s because it has very obvious hints of Robert De Niro’s Taxi Driver.
And it looks just as brutal, too.
Acclaimed director Lynne Ramsay returns to direct You Were Never Really Here after a six-year hiatus – her last feature film was the critically acclaimed We Need To Talk About Kevin.
And it looks as though she’s back on top form.
This violent, gritty drama already debuted at the Cannes Film Festival back last year… and earned high praise from everyone who was lucky enough to see it. Based on the 2013 novel Bored To Death by Jonathan Ames, the film follows the gritty and determined Joe – hired to rescue kidnapped girls in a series of Taken-esque plots.
But things soon start to get out of control…
Judging from the trailer, there’s plenty to love. The stylish visuals and determined acting from Joaquin Phoenix combine to create a tense, grim and utterly brutal few minutes. It’s quite the impressive tease, and we can’t wait to get stuck into the full film.
This is certainly one to look out for – Ramsay bagged Best Screenplay at Cannes for the movie, with Joaquin Phoenix landing the coveted Best Actor award for his role in You Were Never Really Here.
And we can’t wait to see it.
You Were Never Really Here stars Joaquin Phoenix, Ekaterina Samsonov, and Alessandro Nivola.
Lynne Ramsay both write and directed the movie.
You Were Never Really Here heads to cinemas on 9 March 2018.
