A Captain Marvel movie may still be a few years away, but The Avengers director Joss Whedon may be open to directing it…
During an interview with Buzzfeed, the Marvel maestro revealed that he might be open to directing Captain Marvel even if he is keen to create something original once again.
“I would never rule anything out,” he said. “Because I like working here. By the same token, the biggest thing for me is that I need to do something that I create myself. It’s been way too long since I created a universe.”
Of course, Joss Whedon is renowned for his strong female characters… and having worked with the likes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Black Widow, it’s easy to see why. But could he be convinced to take on Captain Marvel? It seems he already had some ideas to create his very own strong female superhero.
“I will say that when I was thinking about, ‘Well, if I wasn’t going to do Avengers 2, what would I want to do?’ — of course the first thing I thought of was turn-of-the-century female Batman. Not Batman actually… But, you know, something cool.”
Does this mean he’d be interested in Captain Marvel?
“Captain Marvel I don’t know as well [as other comic books],” he said. “There have been a few [versions] of her. I have the first issue of Ms. Marvel, back when she was that, and had the Farrah hair. My only issue with her is that she always felt sort of on top. She was very driven. A winner. I always like to dig into the soil of things to find my heroes, if I can.”
Obviously, there’s been a lot of press recently when it comes to female superhero movies… and the distinct lack of female directors. But with DC attempting to level the playing field by appointing Michelle MacLaren to direct Wonder Woman, it looks as though Marvel may be under some pressure to also find a female director.
But should Marvel really follow suit?
Joss Whedon himself was working on a Wonder Woman movie back in 2009… and he might just prove to be the perfect director for the job. Considering his history with the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as his penchant for strong female characters, I can’t help thinking that Marvel might be keen to snap him up.
Quite how this all plays out remains to be seen… and as for Captain Marvel, it’s still early days. So for now, we’ll have to wait and see.
Captain Marvel heads to cinemas on 6 July 2018.
