Marvel Studios has announced a mystery press event, to be held this Tuesday, 29 April. But what’s it all about? And will it have anything to do with their upcoming movies?
Currently, no further details have been revealed, other than that the event takes place on the 29 April at the El Capitan theatre in Los Angeles. But a tweet from Marvel themselves seems to indicate that the event will also be open to fans… even if there are no other details as yet.
But what’s this really all about?
It’s no secret that the official Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer was supposed to air on that very date… but when it was leaked online late last week, Marvel were forced to come clean and release the trailer early.
Now, some further footage will be shown in the USA alongside Tuesday’s episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. But what about this mystery event? It looks as though Marvel may have been spurred to replace the official trailer release with something new. But what exactly is it? There are already a few possibilities…
Avengers: Age of Ultron Footage
Not exactly the most exciting of answers, but it seems logical that Marvel might react to the early release of the official Age of Ultron trailer by releasing even more tantalizing clips of the upcoming ‘Avengers’ sequel. But is that really all Marvel has up its sleeves?
I can’t help thinking that this would be a bit of an anti-climax… and after the recent leaks, I’m not sure if a bit of extra footage warrants its own special mystery event. But it’s still a possibility.
Captain America 3 Confirmation
It’s been rumoured for several weeks that Captain America 3 will feature none other than Robert Downey Jr… and could well start to show some cracks in the Avengers’ armour. But while another Captain America sequel has been on the cards for a while, we’re yet to find out what this new sequel might be about.
Of course, the rumour that Downey would appear in Cap’s solo movie rocked the comic book movie world. But we’re yet to hear anything concrete from Marvel – even if Downey himself has all but confirmed the rumours. If Captain America 3 is confirmed, then maybe we’ll get some indication about the upcoming plot, perhaps even a working title. But maybe that’s just wishful thinking.
New Movie Confirmations
Obviously, the big news on everyone’s lips is the extensive DC slate that was recently announced by Warner Bros… including an impressive number of all-new comic book movie properties. But will Marvel’s big event reveal their upcoming movie slate? And will it rival DC’s movie schedule?
There’s certainly been plenty of talk about the upcoming Doctor Strange movie… and with a Black Panther film supposedly in the works, perhaps it’s time to shed some light on some of these more obscure Marvel properties. But what else does Marvel have in the works? At the moment it’s unclear, but might even include a new Hulk sequel or even the often-discussed female solo movie. But for now, we’ll have to wait and see.
Civil War Revealed?
Another distinct possibility is that Marvel has something very special planned. Perhaps even more special than we can imagine. After those Captain America 3 rumours that I mentioned earlier, it’s believed that Marvel could be gearing up towards a big screen adaptation of the Civil War storyline.
Marvel’s Civil War is well known amongst comic book fans and essentially split the superhero population down the middle. After increased pressure from the US government, heroes are forced to register… and this causes an all-out civil war amongst our favourite superheroes. But this could be a lot more problematic.
Given that character rights are spread across numerous film studios, it’s unlikely that we’ll get to see an entirely faithful adaptation of the Civil War comic books. But could this big announcement unveil a Civil War movie? Maybe even a collaboration between studios to bring Spider-Man into the picture?
Whatever happens, it looks as though this is one Marvel secret that won’t be getting leaked early. So for now, we’ll have to wait and see.
